IPX is the protocol responsible for addressing in IPX/SPX, as well as being the connectionless transport protocol of the suite In this way, it is like User Datagram Protocol (UDP) and Internet Protocol (IP) combined into one IPX addresses, like IP addresses, consist of a network and node portion Unlike IP addresses, however, IPX addresses do not use a mask Instead, the division between the network and node is of a fixed length This "limitation" is not really a problem because IPX addresses are 80 bits (10 bytes), whereas IP addresses are 32 bits (4 bytes) This leads to an incredibly large address space So large, in fact, that address waste is not a concern IPX addresses are typically written in hexadecimal (base 16, like MAC addresses), and they consist of 20 hexadecimal digits A typical IPX address looks like this: 0123456789ABCDEF0F1E The first 32 bits of an IPX address (the first eight hex digits, or 01234567, in the example) represent the network, and the last 48 bits represent the node This provides a total of over 4 billion networks with over 262 trillion hosts per network, which should be plenty! Figure 7-1 shows a breakdown of an IPX address

Figure 7-1: IPX address division The host portion of an IPX address is typically the MAC address of the device's network interface The network portion can be whatever you choose because, unlike in TCP/IP, no central authority controls IPX network numbers Therefore, it is sometimes easier to identify the network/node division in an IPX address by counting the last 12 hex digits (from right to left), rather than counting the first 8 hex digits For instance, if your network address were 00000001 and your node address were 12345678ABCD, your address would actually be written as 112345678ABCD, with all of the leading zeros dropped In this case, it is easier to count 12 digits from the right to find the divider Just like in TCP/IP, in IPX, the network number determines whether a host is local or remote If the number is the same for both hosts, they are local If not, a router must be used to connect One area that can be a bit complicated is internal network addresses used on some IPX servers An internal network address is a logical (in other words, pretend) network used by Novell servers to identify the operating system and network services The internal network

address must, of course, be unique, and includes only one host: the server on which it resides The host address for the server on the internal network is 000000000001 Figure 7-2 shows an example of an internal network address

Figure 7-2: An internal network address on a dual-homed server IPX also has provisions for sending broadcasts In IPX, the broadcast address is all binary 1's, just like in IP, except because IPX addresses are in hex, this is represented by the all Fs (FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF) address The all 0's address is also used in IPX to represent "this network," just like IP IPX also includes a specification for multiplexing between transmissions using sockets IPX sockets are 2-byte numbers that are similar to UDP ports, and they are used for the same purpose (You may also hear the term sockets used in TCP/IP; in TCP/IP, a socket is the full address, including the IP address, transport protocol, and port) All in all, IPX addressing is much simpler than IP addressing because there is no need (or functionality) for subnetting Finally, Figure 7-3 depicts an IPX packet A short description of each of the fields is provided here

The physical layer is responsible for the most substantial of all functions All connectors, cabling, frequency specifications, distances, propagation-delay requirements, voltages-in short, all things physical-reside at the physical layer Some common physical-layer protocols are EIA/TIA 568A and B, RS 232, 10BaseT, 10Base2, 10Base5, 100BaseT, and USB

Peer Communication Peer communication is the process in networking whereby each layer communicates with its corresponding layer on the destination machine Note that the layers do not communicate directly, but the process is the same as if they were communicating directly A packet is sent from one host to another with all headers attached; but, as the packet passes up through the model on the other side, each layer is solely responsible for the information in its own header It views everything else as data This process is shown in Figure 1-9

Figure 1-9: Peer communication Note that a layer is concerned only with the header from the exact same layer on the other device It treats everything else as data (even though it isn't) Therefore, one layer can, in a sense, communicate with its twin layer on the other device

The image on the left is being rotated to correct alignment; the image on the right has been corrected and cropped

Finally, I have included a sample network communication between two devices, broken down by layer (see Figure 1-10) Note that this sample is not technically accurate I have included it only for illustrative purposes because it shows how each layer performs a specific function, even if that function isn't performed in exactly the same manner in real life The major technical problem with this diagram lies at the network layer, in the "Intermediate Destination Address" field There is no Intermediate Address field in reality, but because we have not discussed how routing really works yet, this example illustrates the point well enough for now
